Pediatric assessment.

With newborn hearing screening, most children are diagnosed with hearing loss early. But screening doesn't rule out late-onset, fluctuating, or progressive hearing loss. If you have concerns, don't wait.

Why early matters

If hearing loss isn't identified, kids fall behind.

Children with undiagnosed hearing loss can experience academic failure, speech and language delays, cognitive delays, behavioural problems, or social isolation. Audiologists receive training during their University Audiology programs to properly assess many pediatric cases.

With our pediatric assessment, your child's hearing is tested using developmentally appropriate techniques. We pay special attention to acoustic modifications needed both at school and at home. We understand that “family-centred care” and a team approach work best.

APD

Auditory Processing Disorder.

APD affects a small percentage of school-aged children. The ears and brain don't fully coordinate, so the brain has trouble recognizing and interpreting sounds — especially speech in background noise. Children with APD often don't recognize subtle differences between sounds in words, even when the sounds are loud and clear.

Common signs of APD
  • Easily distracted, or unusually bothered by loud or sudden noises
  • Behavior and performance improves in quieter settings
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Reading, spelling, writing, or speech-language difficulties
  • Abstract information is hard to comprehend
  • Verbal (word) math problems are hard
  • Disorganized and forgetful
  • Conversations are hard to follow
